A Refresh or Remodel…what the heck is the difference?

Refresh. Remodel. Redo. Don’t they all mean the same?

Let’s first start with a refresh: A refresh is using existing layouts and updating. This could be new or painted cabinetry, new hardware, new countertops, new flooring and/or new tile. It is updating your existing space to be more current. A refresh does not typically include moving structural elements or electrical elements and only involves minimal plumbing changes. It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

How do you know when to remodel vs. when to refresh?

A refresh is a good option if:

  • You are happy with the size and structural layout of your home.

  • The room’s infrastructure is comfortable, in good working condition and works for your lifestyle.

  • The plumbing and electrical are still functioning properly.

  • The main frustrations with your room are mainly aesthetic/design related.

A remodel, on the other hand, is tearing out walls, making structural changes and/or electrical changes. A remodeling job might include  “gutting” and starting over but it can also exist on a smaller scale-knocking out a wall, demo’ing soffits, redesigning the space and include electrical, structural and plumbing changes.

The two common areas most debated: The Master Bath and the Kitchen.

These two rooms are the most commonly debated when it comes to refresh vs. remodel. Look and feel plays a big part but so does function. Does your space function for you and your lifestyle. If you cook a lot, does your kitchen layout offer you functionality and ease? Is there a lot of “dead space” in your bathroom that could be used differently?

Some of the most common updates in a kitchen or bath refresh include:

  • Cleaning, painting or refacing cabinets.

  • Replacing cabinet knobs and drawer pulls with simple, modern hardware. (Hinges are one of the most common changes in a refresh.)

  • Installing new countertops on existing cabinets.

  • Changing sink style and faucet fixtures.

  • Replacing backsplashes.

  • Updating lighting fixtures.

  • Adding new flooring.

  • Updating Appliances.

What is the difference in price?

  • Cost can be a big factor of course. Every space is different in terms of size and scope of work, but the average kitchen refresh can range from $20,000-$30,000 whereas the average kitchen remodel ranges from $75,000-$100,000. A Bathroom refresh can range from $5,000-$25,000 whereas a remodel for a bathroom could range between $35,000-$50,000 on average.

  • Cost is obviously dictated by your wish list and a refresh can be lower in cost depending on what all needs to be updated. For example, are you okay with the existing hardware and hinges or would you want to replace all of those? Would you be open to painting vs. replacing cabinets? Sometimes a refresh requires the latter due to wear and tear of your cabinetry. Other times, a good, professional paint job can really make a difference. Do you need new flooring or will your existing flooring work?
